La fuerte correlacion entre estos parametros sugeria que la regulacion se producia a nivel de la expresion genica. En las celulas de hepatoma h35 y en cultivos primarios de hepatocitos se comprobo que el efecto era dependiente del tiempo y de las dosis y que se producia fundamentalmente a nivel transcripcional. Experimentos de transfeccion transitoria con delecciones sucesivas de la region 5 del promotor permitieron localizar la region responsable de la induccion entre los nucleotidos -727\/-527.  tambien se estudiaron los patrones de expresion de las isoenzimas hepaticas y extrahepatica de la s-adenosilmetionina sintetasa durante el desarrollo.
