El objeto de la investigacion es precisamente la ambiValencia, en particular en una esfera de actitudes sociopoliticas, las referidas a la igualdad y el estado de bienestar. En el trabajo, tras la discusion de las implicaciones sustantivas y metodologicas de la ambiValencia en general, se describe como es este tipo concreto de ambiValencias en espa\u00f1a, se indaga en las variables que la explican y se descifran sus efectos politicos. Para el analisis empirico se manejan encuestas nacionales (cis, cires, ecbc, instituto de estudios economicos) y se pone nuestro pais en perspectiva comparada, explotando datos internacionales -un eurobarometro y varias encuestas del issp (programa internacional de encuestas sociales), entre otros.  tambien se ha complementado la informacion de las encuestas con datos cualitativos de grupos de discusion realizados en espa\u00f1a.  del trabajo se concluye que en espa\u00f1a hay un nucleo considerable de ciudadanos ambivalentes ante la igualdad y el estado de bienestar. Esa ambiValencia es sustantiva, esto es, no es el producto de una mala medicion de los valores; tiene una estructura interna y esta determinada socialmente. Asi las cosas, son evidentes las implicaciones de estos resultados para la reflexion teorica sobre la igualdad y el estado de bienestar, para la metodolog\u00eda de la investigacion de las actitudes
