Esta tecnica no invasiva, dada su precision, permite un seguimiento diario de la longitud tibial estando el animal consciente. Estudiamos animales machos y hembras, normales o deficitarios en gh por la administracion neonatal de glutamato monosodico (gms), bajo distintas manipulaciones experimentales.  encontramos que el crecimiento es un proceso no lineal ya que presenta incrementos no constantes (miniestirones) tanto dia a dia como incluso en periodos inferiores a 24 h. Ademas encontramos que la velocidad de crecimiento varia con la edad, y el sexo del animal. La rata macho joven parece crecer a velocidad maxima por lo que no puede ser incrementada por la administracion de dosis de gh muy elevadas, mientras que si es posible estimular el crecimiento en la hembra o en animales tratados con gms.  la realimentacion tras un periodo de restriccion de ingesta, en el que se bloquea el crecimiento, no determina un crecimiento compensatorio inmediato en la longitud tibial, como ocurre con el peso corporal, sino que se trata de un fenomeno mas suave y paulatino.
