En su parte inicial se encuentran las siguientes cartas de controversia literaria: la carta del bachiller de la arcadia al capitan salazar de hurtado de mendoza, obra de 1548 en la que se establecen las pautas retoricas de estas epistolas. De 1560, la carta a jeronimo de los rios, el bachiller rivera y el secretario palomino de damasio de frias, y del mismo autor, la carta a una cancion de salado. En las tres misivas se reflejan los distintos puntos de vista del momento en torno a los supuestos que deben conformar la obra literaria, lo que permite un conocimiento directo de la problematica artistica del renacimiento en espa\u00f1a. Se completa la investigacion con la aplicacion de la informacion a la polemica mas importante del siglo xvi, entre herrera y el prete jacopin.
