Este invariante topologico esta directamente asociado con una cantidad integral llamada helicidad, y definida para todo campo vectorial solenoidal.  gracias al estudio de estas propiedades, se desarrolla un modelo topologico del electromagnetismo clasico en el vacio. Este modelo es localmente equivalente a la teoria estandar, dada por las ecuaciones de maxwell, pero es diferente desde un punto de vista global, lo cual permite que existan cargas topologicas, esto es, cantidades conservadas por motivos topologicos. En particular, la helicidad electromagnetica y la carga electrica tienen valores discretizados en este modelo. Las soluciones de las ecuaciones del modelo se llaman nudos electromagneticos.
