Existe una gran variedad de compuestos con diferentes metales, ligandos puente y ligandos terminales en naturaleza y n\u00famero. Los compuestos que presentan rombos m2x2 en su estructura se pueden relacionar con una de las tres estructuras alternativas posibles: con distancia m-m corta, con un anillo regular o con una distancia x-x corta. En este trabajo se han estudiado ls relaciones entre la estructura electr\u00f3nica y la geometr\u00eda del rombo en diversas familias de compuestos, usando para ello la combinaci\u00f3n del an\u00e1lisis de datos estructurales y estudios basados en c\u00e1lculos de orbitales moleculares basado en dos tipos de m\u00e9todos, uno semiemp\u00edrico (m\u00e9todo extended-h\u00ed\u00bcckel) y el otro basado en la densidad electr\u00f3nica (teor\u00eda del funcional de la densidad). Las familias de compuestos estudiados son: d\u00edmeros con un entorno octa\u00e9drico del metal, mon\u00f3meros tricoordinados y d\u00edmeros con el metal en un entorno tricoordinado. Se han establecido unas sencillas reglas de recuento de electrones basadas en los orbitales moleculares enlazantes del esqueleto que permiten predecir en qu\u00e9 casos se tendr\u00e1 un anillo con interacci\u00f3n metal-metal (n\u00famero de electrones del esqueleto, nee = 4,6) y en qu\u00e9 casos se tendr\u00e1 un anillo regular (nee=8). Tambi\u00e9n se ha estudiado mediante an\u00e1lisis de bandas las estructuras electr\u00f3nica de los anillos ni2p2 presentes en un s\u00f3lido tridimensional, el compuesto bani2p4, encontr\u00e1ndose
