En machos, la glandula posee dos tipos de celulas secretoras (tipos i y ii), mientras que en hembras hay un unico tipo. Las poblaciones celulares varian en funcion de los niveles de androgenos. En el presente trabajo se determino la importancia de la proliferacion celular en los cambios poblacionales de las celulas secretoras. Se han utilizado tres situaciones: 1) desarrollo postnatal en animales de ambos sexos; 2) deprivacion de androgenos gonadales en machos adultos mediante gonadectomia; 3) tratamiento de hembras adultas con propionato de testosterona. Se realizaron analisis estereologicos, de la actividad proliferativa (mediante marcaje con bromodeoxiuridina) y de la expresion de los organizadores nucleolares argirofilos. El desarrollo postnatal fue similar en ambos sexos, aunque los machos presentaron una mayor actividad proliferativa. Las celulas tipo ii se diferencian a partir de las tipo i en una oleada que surge a los 21 dias del desarrollo. Una vez diferenciadas se mantienen por medio de su propia actividad proliferativa y muestran una mayor expresion de los organizadores nucleolares argirofilos que el resto de celulas secretoras. La desaparicion de las celulas tipo ii tras la orquidectomia no coincide con fenomenos de muerte celular, estando ligada a procesos de transdiferenciacion hacia el tipo i.
