Dado que se obtienen en muy peque\u00f1a cantidad de sus fuentes naturales se aborda su obtencion por sintesis organica a partir de compuestos biciclicos de origen vegetal facilmente asequibles.  en concreto se consigue la transformacion de acido labdanolico (procedente de la jara) y esclareol (aislado de la salvia) en el compuesto triciclico intermedio isoanticopalato de metilo. A partir de este se sintetizan diversos tipos de diterpenos espongianicos: espongianos con funcionalidad acetalica en el cuarto anillo (anillo d), espongianos con el anillo d furanico, compuestos nitrogenados lactamicos estructuralmente relacionados con los espongianos analogos de productos naturales marinos biologicamente activos, compuestos espongianos con una 16-lactona como el producto natural isoagatolactona (el primer espongiano aislado en los a\u00f1os 70), espongianos con lactona situada en el carbono 15, y, por ultimo, se realiza la sintesis de 9,11-secoespongianos, compuestos
