De ahi que el esquema temporal se organiza en cinco etapas:  hasta el siglo xviii, cuando surge la estetica de las ruinas gracias a la crisis del clasicismo y a la aparicion del movimiento del picturesque; 2. El periodo que va desde el inicio del siglo xix hasta 1875, etapa clave por el inicio de la politica institucional dirigida a la proteccion de los monumentos; entre 1875 y 1936, cuando se realizan las grandes restauraciones \u00abesplendidas\u00bb, se da el amplio y largo debate teorico entre los partidarios de la conservacion y los de la restauracion, y se da la rapida evolucion de las normas legales para la proteccion de los monumentos; 4. La etapa que va desde 1936 a 1975 supone la ruptura del proceso evolutivo en la cultura del patrimonio arquitectonico espa\u00f1ol, que condicionada por los acontecimientos politicos sufre una total desconexion del contexto europeo; 5. Una vision general de los ultimos veinte a\u00f1os cuando tras el cambio politico de los a\u00f1os setenta se vuelve a conectar con la cultura europea, iniciandose en los a\u00f1os ochenta un camino independiente definido por la politica de las autonomias.  la vertebracion de la tesis es la interrelaccion de las tres grandes vertientes de la restauracion artistica legislacion, teoria y practica.  la intervencion en el patrimonio arquitectonico es necesaria, pero debe reducirse a lo minimo y diferenciar lo antiguo de lo nuevo, ya que lo mas importante es conservar el valor original de la
