En primer lugar, se muestra que la modulacion estructural puede evolucionar hacia un regimen solitonico en todos los compuestos que presentan estas fases. Ademas, se demuestra que las anarmonicidades caracteristicas de estos regimenes pueden describirse mediante un parametro de orden cuya fase inhomogenea satisface una ecuacion diferencial de sine-gordon.  sintetizando los resultados anteriores se ha desarrollado un modelo que permite describir la variacion de la modulacion estructural con la temperatura en terminos de un numero reducido de parametros. La aplicacion de este modelo ha permitido determinar por primera vez la densidad de solitones en una estructura ic a partir de datos de difraccion. En lo correspondiente a la dependencia con la temperatura del diagrama de difraccion, se ha demostrado que es debida, fundamentalmente, al cambio en la modulacion estructural y no al efecto de fasones.
