Su adhesion a celulas del hospedador y a materiales inertes, es uno de sus principales factores de virulencia, pero de dificil evaluacion.  hemos puesto a punto un metodo fluorometrico que permite analizar la adhesion al poliestireno de distintas muestras y en diversas condiciones, de una forma rapida y objetiva. Existe una gran variabilidad en la capacidad de adhesion al poliestireno tanto intra-como interespecifica dentro del genero candida, siendo c. Albicans y c.  tropicalis las especies que en nuestro modelo, mas se adherian al poliestirano, el serotipo b de c. Albicans mostro una serie de caracteristicas diferenciales al serotipo a y resulto tambien algo mas adherente al poliestireno. En c. Parapsilosis el morfotipo rugoso y\/o la mayor produccion de proteinasa iba asociado a una mayor adhesion y en c. Albicans existe una relacion directa entre filamentacion, hidrofobicidad y adhesion, asi como entre esta y una mayor produccion de fosfolipasa, actividad enzimatica unicamente detectada en esta especie. Los aislamientos de c. Albicans de alta adhesion al poliestireno mostraban una mayor homogeneidad en el perfil proteico y genetico que los de baja adhesion. Entre los aislamientos de baja adhesion se han detectado algunos con caracteristicas atipicas que han sido posteriormente identificados como candida dubliniensis.  la saliva y el suero pueden inhibir la adhesion de c.  albicans al poliestireno.
