Por una parte, se han estudiado compuestos de coordinacion polimetalicos, susceptibles de dar lugar a materiales moleculares con una magnetizacion espontanea por debajo de una temperatura critica te (ferromagnetos moleculares). Se ha mostrado que los complejos bimetalicos con ligandos tipo edta constituyen sistemas magneticos modelo para este fin.
