La frecuencia de las oscilaciones es dependiente de la concentracion del agonista, mientras que la altura de pico no varia con la concentracion. La fase de caida de las oscilaciones es caracteristica de cada tipo de agonista.  sin embargo, las hormonas esteroides progesterona y estradiol inducen un aumento sostenido del ca2+, que es dependiente del ca2+ extracelular. Estos resultados podrian explicar los efectos no genomicos de stos esteroides en hepatocitos.  la proteina quinasa c (pkc) retroinhibe las oscilaciones de ca2+ inducidas por fenilefrina y vasopresina, ya que los activadores de la pkc inhiben las oscilaciones mientras que los inhibidores de la pkc revocan esa inhibicion, y prolongan la fase de caida de las oscilaciones.  el amp ciclico produce una potenciacion de las oscilaciones inducidas por agonistas, que es diferente dependiendo del agonista. Sin embargo, el gmp ciclico no produce ningun efecto sobre las oscilaciones. Por otra parte, la adrenalina, a concentraciones fisiologicas, necesita la activacion de dos adrenoreceptores, alfa1 y beta2, para inducir oscilaciones de ca2+.  en hepatocitos, las oscilaciones de ca2+ no se generan por un mecanismo convencional el ca2+ induce la liberacion del ca2+ (cicr), ya que la cafeina, un potenciador de este mecanismo, ni produce oscilaciones ni potencia las inducidas por agonistas, al contrario las inhibe. Sin embargo, la rianodina, un inhibidor del mecanismo cicr, inhibe las oscilaciones inducidas por vasopresina pero no afecta a las inducidas por fenilefrina.
