El mecanismo \u00edntimo por el que eso se consigue se desconoce, aunque se ha postulado una acci\u00f3n inmunomoduladora de los procesos de inflamaci\u00f3n\/antiinflamaci\u00f3n. Para conocer la influencia del interfer\u00f3n beta sobre los niveles de citocinas proinflamatorias (tnf-alfa y vcam-1) y antiinflamatorias (il-4 e il-10), hemos estudiado durante 27 meses un grupo de 19 pacientes con em, clinicamente estables y tratados con interfer\u00f3n; las determinaciones se realizar\u00f3n cada 3 meses durante todo el tiempo que duro al estudio. Para asegurar que las variaciones en las interlecuinas eran debidas exclusivamente a la acci\u00f3n del interfer\u00f3n, hemos estudiado \u00fanicamente a pacientes que han permanecido estables durante todo el tiempo del estudio, lo que adem\u00e1s se comprob\u00f3 realizando determinaciones simult\u00e1neas de neopterina (marcador de actividad) y de cd-30 (marcador de remisi\u00f3n).  en todos los pacientes se apreci\u00f3 un pico m\u00e1ximo de los niveles de il-4 e il-10 entre los 9 y 12 meses de tratamiento y un comportamiento mucho m\u00e1s heterog\u00e9neo de las interleucinas proinflamatorias.El hecho de que los pacientes permaneciesesn cl\u00ednicamente estables a pesar de que a los 15-18 meses de tratamiento los niveles de il-4 e il-10 retornasen a niveles similares a los del inicio, sugiere que el interfer\u00f3n tiene un efecto inmunomodulador. nuestros resultados confirman que la determinaci\u00f3n aislada de interleucinas no puede utilizarse como marcador de eficacia de esta forma de tratamiento.  por otro lado, se determinar\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n los niveles de adhesinas s\u00e9ricas (vcam-1 e icam-1), y se les relacion\u00f3 con la captaci\u00f3n de gadolinio (indicador de inflamaci\u00f3n activa al reflejar ruptura de barrera hematoencef\u00e1lica) demostr\u00e1ndose relaci\u00f3n significativa con la elevaci\u00f3n de niveles de vcam. estos
