Su estudio electroquimico, mediante palarografia dc, voltametria y culombimetria, complementado con espectroscopia uv y deteccion de productos, ha llevado a proponer un mecanismo de reduccion en el egm que depende de la composicion del medio: reduccion de dos electrones del doble enlace n(3)=c(4) seguida de una deaminacion y una reduccion de un electron para dar un radical libre, el cual en presencia de sustancias con actividad superficial o cierta concentracion de acidos organicos es expulsado del electrodo y dimeriza, en caso contrario sufre una reduccion de un electron mas.
