Levinas, la tradicion filosofica occidental no ha superado la inmanencia, por su deficiente concepcion de la subjetividad. En esa tradicion, el sujeto ha sido entendido como conciencia.  en consecuencia, el sujeto siempre se comprende desde si mismo. Toda salida de si tiene en el mismo su origen y, al final, revierte en el.  levinas propone comprender al sujeto no a partir de si, sino a partir del otro. El otro es presentado como la condicion previa de toda subjetividad.  esto es posible porque la alteridad del otro es absoluta: no comparte con el mismo ni un genero comun, ni siquiera su condicion de existente. Levinas emplea el termino \u00absustitucion\u00bb para designar ese proceso.
