Dichas celulas se localizan casi exclusivamente en el epitelio de la mucosa gastrica tanto en el cuerpo, dotado de glandulas, como en el piloro, carente de ellas. Se han observado celulas endocrinas inmunorreactivas con antisueros frente a glucagon, somatostatina, sustancia p, bombesina, serotonina, met-encefalina y cromogranina; estas ultimas, por primera vez en el tracto digestivo de peces. Ademas, en el piloro se han detectado celulas inmunorreactivas con antisueros anti-cck\/gastrina.
