Von hildebrand es uno de los primeros eticos que ha llevado a cabo un profundo analisis de la intencion u opcion fundamental y ha puesto de manifiesto su importancia en la vida moral personal. La calidad moral de una persona se mide, segun el autor, por su participacion en los valores morales, participacion que se inicia con su conocimiento y se hace efectiva, sobre todo, en la actitud que la persona adopta frente a ellos y en las acciones con las que da respuesta a la llamada que le dirigen. Von hildebrand llama intencion u opcion fundamental a la decision que una persona toma en orden a hacer de la propia vida una respuesta libre, explicita y permanente a las exigencias del mundo de los valores morales.
