La cornea esta inervada por nociceptores polimodales (que responden a la estimulacion mecanica, termica y quimica) y nociceptores mecanicos (que solo tienen sensibilidad mecanica). En la esclera existen tres tipos de nociceptores: polimodales, mecanicos y mecano-termicos. El calentamiento supraumbral de los nociceptores modifica su respuesta a posteriores estimulos termicos y quimicos, pero no afecta la respuesta a los estimulos mecanicos. En la esclera y en el iris existen mecanorreceptores de bajo umbral, sensibles exclusivamente a los estimulos mecanicos suaves. Ademas de los receptores anteriores, se ha encontrado en las cubiertas oculares un grupo de receptores sensibles a la disminucion de la temperatura.  los receptores de frio de la cornea (nociceptores de frio) son funcionalmente diferentes de los localizados en la esclera (receptores de frio de bajo umbral).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Datos acad\u00e9micos de la tesis doctoral
