Entre los diferentes tipos de nociceptores, los nociceptores polimodales (np) son los mas abundantes, y se caracterizan por responder a estimulos mecanicos de alto umbral, a calentamientos lesivos y a irritantes quimicos. Existe una amplia informacion de la respuesta de los np cutaneos a estimulos de naturaleza mecanica y termica, sin embargo, el conocimiento de la accion de los irritantes quimicos sobre los np es escaso y confuso.  el objetivo de esta tesis fue investigar la respuesta de los np a diferentes estimulos quimicos, utilizando como modelo la cornea del ojo. A tal fin, se registro la actividad electrica de fibras aisladas de los nervios ciliares del gato, definiendo los tipos de receptores sensoriales corneales y su respuesta a irritantes quimicos.  los resultados muestran que la cornea esta inervada mayoritariamente por np cuyas caracteristicas no difieren, a excepcion de su umbral mecanico menor, de los np cutaneos. Asimismo, se ha descubierto que la respuesta de los np a estimulos acidos puede suprimirse con capsaicina (0.33 mm) y con dosis milimolares de los antagonistas de los canales de ca2+ (cd2+ y diltiazem), sin alterarse la capacidad de respuesta de los np a estimulos mecaniso. Estos datos refuerzan la hipotesis planteada en este trabajo de que los np presentan mecanismos de traduccion diferentes para estimulos de naturaleza quimica y
