El azufre organico contenido en el carbon forma parte de su estructura molecular en forma de tioles, sulfuros y tiofenos. La desulfuracion de este tipo de azufre se ha estudiado microbiologicamente y con los compuestos modelo: dibenzotiofeno (dbt) y acido 2-tiofeno (t2c). Como microorganismos se han utilizado bacterias termoacidofilas, bacterias mesofilas de coleccion y se han aislado y seleccionado bacterias procedentes de las zonas carboniferas del bergueda (prepirineo catalan).  el estudio realizado con bacterias termofilas ha demostrado que el dbt sufre una degradacion abiotica del 85% durante 80h de incubacion, a 70 grados c. Referente al t2c, es estable a esta temperatura y se ha observado que la bacteria termofila sulfolobus solfataricus presenta una captacion de 24 nmoles 02\/min*mg prot. En presencia de t2c. Esta oxidacion es inducida por el mismo substrato.  la bacteria mesofila pseudomonas putida degrada el dbt en un 21% en situacion de \u00abresting cells\u00bb, pero no degrada el t2c.  durante el aislamiento de bacterias del bergueda se han seleccionado cultivos que contienen cepas de agrobacterium, xanthomonas i corinebacterias. Estos cultivos bacterianos desulfuran el dbt con la liberacion de sulfatos en el medio y la formacion de 2-hidroxibifenil.
