En este trabajo mostramos cual es el papel preciso que representa el concepto de razon, entendida como facultad contrapuesta a la fe vital, dentro del marco general de la gnoseolog\u00eda unamuniana. Asi, tras rastrear en una primera parte las posibles influencias filosoficas (kant, hegel, schopenhauer, kierkegaard y james) y cientificas (la ciencia del xix y el evolucionismo darwinista) de las que es deudor el pensamiento de unamuno y de mostrar cuales son las fuentes filosoficas que subyacen a los principales conceptos de su gnoseolog\u00eda, nos centraremos en el analisis concreto de dichos conceptos y, mas precisamente, en el estudio del concepto de razon y en la relacion tragica y conflictiva que se da entre este y la fe como simbolo de la vida. Todo ello nos permitira mostrar que, para unamuno, la razon, como especificacion del ambito de lo logico-racional, viene a cumplir una triple funcion:  1) instrumental, como lenguaje-herramienta al servicio de la comunicacion. No hay lenguaje sin una \u00abcierta\u00bb base logica-racional y sin lenguaje no hay comunicacion ni transmision de ideas y sentimientos posibles.  2) funcional, como factor de progreso en cuanto que la razon sirva al desarrollo cientifico y a la ciencia, siempre y cuando esta ultima se someta a la honradez, la sinceridad y la verdad.  3) ontologica, como contrapunto a la vida y a la fe y como esencia tragica del mismo ser del hombre. Sin la razon como enemiga de la vida no puede estallar el conflicto base \u00abdel sentimiento tragico de la vida\u00bb.  en conclusion, creemos que desvalorizar el papel que representa la razon en el
