Los autores que apoyan esta teoria plantean que la presencia continua en los tejidos de estas especies reactivas derivadas del oxigeno, seria la causa de los procesos degenerativos que tienen lugar con el paso de los a\u00f1os. Con este trabajo hemos intentado analizar la implicacion de los radicales en el fenomeno de envejecimiento, comprobando en primer lugar si la supuesta caida de las defensas antioxidantes con la edad tiene lugar en una especie con una tasa metabolica intermedia bastante cercana a la del hombre. Para completar el trabajo con un enfoque experimental y no unicamente descriptivo, hemos inhibido una de las principales enzimas antioxidantes la catalasa, de forma cronica en nuestros animales. Esta aproximacion nos ha permitido comprobar la ya postulada compensacion homeostatica entre antioxidantes y hasta que punto este tipo de manipulaciones afectan o no a la longevidad tanto maxima como
