La investigacion se ha centrado en el tallo de la planta y se buscan los cambios estructurales o metabolicos que determinan la resistencia o susceptibilidad a la enfermedad. La evaluacion de la resistencia ha mostrado que yolo wonder es sensible, americano es intermedio y smith-5 es resistente.  para el analisis de la defensa estructural se ha utilizado la tecnica de infiltracion e inclusion del tejido en parafina y resina spurr. La observacion al microscopio optico y electronico; no muestra diferencias apreciables entre las tres variedades, aunque si se observan diferencias en la ticion citoquimica de peroxidasas, las cuales se vierten al espacio intercelular en la variedad resistente smith-5.  para la defensa bioquimica se ha analizado por cromatografia de gases, la fitoalexina capsidiol obteniendose unos valores fungiestaticos solo en smith-5. El analisis de los acidos fenolicos por hplc mostro diferencias considerables entre las tres variedades con un incremento de sintesis en smith-5 y una produccion de ac.
