El gen que codifica la proteina p72 fue identificado utilizando sondas oligonucleotidicas derivadas de secuencias parciales de aminoacidos de la proteina purificada. La determinacion de la secuencia de nucleotidos del gen permitio deducir la secuencia de aminoacidos de la proteina y facilito su posterior expresion en escherichia coli. La proteina recombinante fue purificada y utilizada como antigeno para el diagnostico serologico de la enfermedad.  el gen que codifica una hipotetica ntpasa viral fue identificado empleando oligonucleotidos correspondientes a secuencias consenso de diversas atpasas. La secuenciacion del gen revelo la existencia de una similitud significativa con proteinas de una superfamilia de helicasas. El gen fue expresado en e.Coli.
