En particular, cuando los potenciales h\u00eddricos se vuelven muy negativos (sequ\u00eda) o las temperaturas muy bajas (heladas) aumenta el riesgo de que la columna de agua en el interior de las plantas se rompa, con la consiguiente p\u00e9rdida de conductividad hidr\u00e1ulica. La vulnerabilidad del sistema conductor a esta disfunci\u00f3n, denominada embolismo, var\u00eda seg\u00fan las especies y los tejidos considerados, y ha sido reconocida como uno de los factores clave en la respuesta de las plantas a diversos estr\u00e9s ambientales.  en esta tesis se estudian las implicaciones del embolismo en el xilema para la resistencia de diversas plantas le\u00f1osas a la sequ\u00eda y las heladas, con los objetivos siguientes:  1,- estudiar el mecanismo de formaci\u00f3n de embolias inducidas por las heladas en larrea tridentata.  2,- comparar la estructura y el funcionamiento del xilema de ra\u00edces y ramas.  3,- testar la existencia de un compromiso entre eficiencia y seguridad en el sistema conductor.  4,- estudiar los m\u00e1rgenes de seguridad al que operan las especies de distintas comunidades.  5,- caracterizar las estrategias que las especies estudiadas usan para hacer frente a la sequ\u00eda.  6,- predecir los posibles efectos que el cambio cim\u00e1tico puede tener sobre las especies estudiadas.  en relaci\u00f3n a estos objetivos, las principales aportaciones de los estudios que componen la tesis han sido las siguientes:  1,- las c\u00e9lulas vivas del par\u00e9nquima influyen en la formaci\u00f3n de los embolismos inducidos por las heladas y, probablemente, tienen un papel activo hasta ahora no reconocido en el transporte de agua a trav\u00e9s de las plantas.  2,- las ra\u00edces operan m\u00e1s cerca de su l\u00edmite hidr\u00e1ulico (en relaci\u00f3n a la sequ\u00eda) que las ramas de tama\u00f1o similar.  3,- hay una
