Cantidades minoritarias del viroide se han detectado en asociacion con nucleos y cloroplastos. Se ha desarrollado un sistema de sintesis in vitro del asbvd obtenido a partir de hojas de aguacate infectado. Los rnas sintetizados son fundamentalmente de la misma polaridad que el viroide infectivo, longitud mayor que la unitaria y estan asociados en complejos de doble hebra.  la sintesis es insensible al inhibidor de transcripcion -amanitina, lo que sugiere la implicacion de una rna polimerasa de tipo i. Se propone que el asbvd se replica en el nucleo para despues traslocarse al citoplasma donde se acumula. Se han aportado evidencias que sugieren la implicacion de la reaccion de autocorte in vitro en ausencia de proteinas de los rnas del asbvd en su mecanismo de replicacion in
