Asi mismo, el bloqueo de los adrenoceptores alfa2 se tradujo en importantes incrementos en la severidad del sindrome de abstinencia.  ambos tipos de receptores mostraron diferentes grados de tolerancia para su efecto inhibitorio sobre la actividad tirosina hidroxilasa cerebral in vivo durante el tratamiento cronico con morfina. Por otra parte, en muestras cerebrales postmortem de adictos a opiaceos se han detectado descensos en la densidad de los adrenoceptores alfa2 con respecto a individuos control.  en conjunto, los resultados confirman la hipotesis de un incremento en la densidad de los adrenoceptores alfa2 durante la abstinencia espontanea a opiaceos y su relevancia sobre la severidad del sindrome de
