Aunque su caracterizacion a nivel genetico ha sido bastante exhaustiva, su comportamiento a nivel fisico-quimico y su mecanismo de accion frente a las celulas a las que ataca son virtualmente desconocidos a nivel molecular, debido, en parte, a la falta de preparaciones de esta proteina lo suficientemente puras como para permitir ese tipo de estudios. En el presente trabajo se ha encontrado un metodo adecuado de purificacion de la toxina activa que ha permitido una mejor caracterizacion bioquimica de la hemolisina. Ademas, se ha podido realizar un estudio mas exhaustivo de su mecanismo de accion mediante la utilizacion de liposomas unilamelares como modelo de membrana, mas sencillo que las membranas de la celula diana.
