Se han elegido tres proteinas que abarcan un amplio rango de interacciones con la membrana: desde el sistema modelo que supone la bacteriorrodopsina, pasando por una proteina intrinseca de la membrana interna mitocondrial, hasta una proteina anfitropica como la colicina a, que es capaz tanto de permanecer en disolucion acuosa como de insertarse en una bicapa. Las tecnicas espectroscopicas empleadas han sido la absorcion visible del retinal en la bacteriorrodopsina y un modelo sintetico, la atenuacion de la fluorescencia intrinseca de la ucp y la transferencia de energia desde los triptofanos de la colicina a hasta una sonda localizada en la bicapa.
