La principal via de entrada al organismo es la oral. Su toxicidad reside en que no se puede degradar ni quimica ni biologicamente por lo que se va acumulando en las cadenas troficas. Nuestro objetivo se centro en investigar el mecanismo de accion de este cation sobre la absorcion intestinal de azucares y aminoacidos presentes en cualquier dieta normal humana o animal. El cadmio disminuye la absorcion intestinal tanto de monasacaridos como de aminoacidos neutros siguiendo un efecto dosis respuesta. Esta inhibicion aumenta por previa exposicion de la mucosa al metal lo que nos indicaria que su efecto no es inmediato, no es reversible por lavado del tejido intestinal con suero fisiologico o edta pero si lo es, en parte, por lavado conditioeritritol. Su accion parece ejercerse por union a grupos quimicos de membrana mas o menos profundos (preferentemente grupos sulfihidrilos, sh,). La accion del cadmio no lleva asociada alteracion tisular cronica o aguda, ni disminucion de la difusion.  el efecto parece deberse a la inhibicion en ambos casos (d-galactosa y l-treonina) del sistema de transporte acoplado al sodio del borde en cepillo.  sistema que es alterado por modificaciones en grupos quimicos de las proteinas transportadoras y por disminucion en la actividad de la atp asa na\/k de la membrana basolateral. El cadmio ejerce una inhibicion de tipo no competitivo. La actividad enzimatica digestiva se encuentra afectada por el metal al verse alterada la atividad de la aminopeptidasa y sacarasa presentes en la mucosa intestinal.
