Para determinar la naturaleza de este fenomeno regresivo en el cerebro en desarrollo se inyecto el aminoacido excitador acido quinolinico (aq) en el estriado de ratas recien nacidas. Asi se excluyo toda lesion directa sobre el mesencefalo, con una lesion patogenicamente similar a la h-i.  los resultados mostraron una reduccion del numero de neuronas tirosina hidroxilasa + en la sn, en donde no se aprecio gliosis y si perdida neuronal con la tincion de nbsl. El area preservada de estriado, cuantificada por analisis de imagen computarizado, se correlaciono estrechamente con el grado de preservacion neuronal (r=0.77 p&lt;.01). Dado que la inyeccion de aq produce un tipo de lesion que respeta los axones, se postula la existencia de un factor neurotrofico en el estriado del cual depende la viabilidad de las neuronas de la sn
