Los animales usados fueron ratas ico: ofa.  en machos, el acido oleico se absorbe mejor que el elaidico. En hembras no hay diferencias entre ambos acidos. Las hembras son mas eficaces que los machos a la hora de absorber acidos grasos. Los machos orquidectomizados absorben ambos acidos de un modo similar a las hembras. La diferencia entre los acidos oleico y elaidico podria ser debida a la mayor afinidad de las proteinas ligadoras de acidos grasos (fabp) por elacido oleico. La diferencia entre machos y hembras se deberia a que los machos (por efecto de los androgenos) tienen una menor concentracion de fabp. El segundo lugar, tanto en machos como en hembras el acido elaidico aumenta la absorcion intestinal de colesterol en relacion al acido oleico. Esto podria ser debido a la mayor disponibilidad del acido elaidico para ser esterificado con colesterol. Ademas, el acido elaidico podria ser incorporado de un modo preferente a la fraccion esteres de colesterol.
