El recien nacido al tener una funcion renal disminuida en relacion a los adultos, constituye una poblacion de riesgo especial. Se han estudiado los mecanismos de aporte de aluminio en el recien nacido, encontrando que la alimentacion parenteral y dentro de ella el gluconato calcico, es la fuente principal de aluminio.  los farmacos endovenosos son una fuente menor. Por otro lado se ha comprobado que las formulas lacteas contienen una cantidad de aluminio muy elevada en relacion a la leche materna. Se han valorado asimismo los niveles de aluminio en sangre, orina y tejidos en recien nacidos que recibian alimentacion parenteral. Los niveles sericos y urinarios estuvieron elevados mientras la recibian, persistiendo estos ultimos elevados hasta 13 semanas despues de su finalizacion, lo que refleja la posibilidad del desarrollo de un acumulo tisular. Este hecho se confirmo en tres recien nacidos fallecidos, que presentaron un aumento del aluminio en cerebro y en hueso.  finalmente, para investigar alguna de las bases celulares de la toxicidad del aluminio, se valoro su efecto sobre la division celular y la sintesis de adn en fibroblastos humanos cultivados \u00abin vitro\u00bb.
