En 1983 bottazo et al establecieron una hipotesis segun la cual los antigenos hla de clase ii que se expresaban ectopicamente en las celulas epitelailes de los tiroides afectados por enfermedades autoinmunes podian presentar los autoantigenos propios y desencadenar la respuesta autoinmune. Recientemente se ha propuesto un papel importante para las moleculas de adhesion en el reconocimiento de la celula diana por los linfocitos t, por lo que el objetivo de este trabajo ha sido establecer los niveles de expresion y la modulacion por citoquinas de las moleculas de adhesion que pueden tener un papel en la respuesta autoinmune. Hemos encontrado que los niveles basales de icam- son muy discretos en las glandulas control y en las glandulas con la enfermedad de graves-basedow, pero se han encontrado niveles elevados de icam-1 en los tumores.  por otra parte, ifn-gamma, tnf-alfa e interleucina-1 beta modulan positivamente la expresion de icam-1, y la combinacion de estas citocinas tiene efecto sinergistico.  lfa-3 y ncam no
