La reaccion esta catalizada por una ld-transpeptidasa, y es insensible a antibioticos beta-lactamicos. Los sustratos de la reaccion son un disacarido tetrapeptido y bis-disacarido tetrapeptido en que la d-alanina terminal es sustituida por el d-aminoacido. La ld-transpeptidasa que cataliza la reaccion de incorporacion parece ser la enzima responsable in vivo de la formacion de los puentes peptidicos diaminopimelico-diaminopimelico, y es la segunda enzima de estereoquimica ld descrita en escherichia coli. Por las modificaciones inducidas en la mureina y por sus propiedades es posible que la incorporacion de d-aminoacidos sea la base para el dise\u00f1o de un nuevo tipo de
