Lug y arm estan implicados en una funcion comun que es requerida para el correcto desarrollo de la mayoria de los discos imaginales. El requerimiento maximo de esta funcion en los discos de patas se produce al comienzo de su desarrollo. En los discos de ala y halterio el requerimiento maximo se produce durante el segundo y principio del tercer estadios larvarios. Esta funcion esta posiblemente incrementando o cualificando la adhesividad celular.  los genes shf, fu, hh y ptc estan integrados en una funcion comun bajo el control de los genes cid y en. Los genes shf, fu y hh promueven el crecimiento en el eje a-p de los discos. Los genes ptc, cid y en controlan dicha accion mediante otra antagonica. La funcion comun de estos 6 genes podria definir las dimensiones de los discos mediante la generacion de 2 gradientes simetricos, formados por la difusion de las proteinas shf y hh. Su rango de difusion definiria el limite de cada compartimento, a y p.  el gen ptc interviene tambien en la determinacion de las posiciones de las venas del compartimento a del ala.
