Ambas teorias, tal como las entiende vicens, salvaguardan la libertad sustancial del hombre.  en este sentido la influencia de los hechos sobre las generaciones que los han vivido o la de los factores economicos y demograficos sobre la estructura social no se oponen al protagonismo de la libertad y a su papel de motor de la historia.  para explicar la combinacion de recurrencia y progreso en la historia, vicens propone una comparacion con la isostasia continental: es lo que el llama la teoria de la isostacia historica, en cuya formulacion completa subyace una concepcion general de la
