Para que se produzca el aumento de la secrecion, previamente tiene que existir un aumento de la concentracion de calcio intracelular (ca2+1). Nuestros resultados muestran la correlacion entre el aumento de glucosa extracelular, el bloqueo del canal de k+ sensible a atp (katp), la iniciacion de la actividad electrica y el aumento de la (ca2+)1, en celulas beta aisladas.  demostrando que el aumento de la (ca2+1) en el inicio de la respuesta a la glucosa es producido por el bloqueo del katp y la consecuente iniciacion de la actividad electrica. Ademas demostramos que en presencia de una concentracion estimulatoria media de glucosa, la (ca2+)1 en un islote entero oscila debido al patron oscilatorio de la actividad electrica propia de la celula beta pancreatica. Este patron oscilatorio implica la existencia de extensas redes de celulas acopladas en el interior del islote, dicho acoplamiento se estudio en terminos de la ca2+ mediante la tecnica de analisis de imagen, llegando a la conclusion de que el islote de langerhnas funciona como un sincitio en respuesta al estimulo por glucosa. Demostramos, que los mecanismos de regulacion de la ca2+ que hacen posible el patron oscilatorio de la ca2+1 y de la actividad electrica son dependientes del metabolismo de la
