Como ejemplo de aplicacion se ha tomado el monasterio de san lorenzo el real de el escorial, construido con una roca granitica: la granodiorita de el escorial.  esta metodolog\u00eda consta de dos fases fundamentales: en laboratorio la roca es sometida a diferentes ensayos de envejecimiento artificial seguidos mediante ensayos ultrasonicos realizados sistematicamente a lo largo de los ciclos, cuyos datos son analizados por metodos estadisticos. Con ello se elabora un patron del comportamiento ultrasonico de la roca ante su proceso de alteracion y se seleccionan los parametros ultrasonicos mas sensibles a dicho proceso. El procedimiento verificado en laboratorio se traslada al monumento donde las zonas estudiadas se clasifican segun dos criterios:  uno visual, de acuerdo con sus formas y grados de alteracion superficial de los sillares, y otro instrumental, en funcion de los parametros ultrasonicos medidos sobre esos mismos sillares. El analisis estadistico de los datos ultrasonicos permite establecer una alta correlacion entre las clasificaciones visual e instrumental, y seleccionar los parametros de maxima sensibilidad a la alteracion. Los resultados obtenidos indican que el procedimiento instrumental puede utilizarse aisladamente como medida de la alteracion relativa de cualquier punto del monumento, pudiendo incluso resultar mas preciso que el visual a la hora de discriminar grados de alteracion.
