Asi, se han identificado las proteinas mayoritarias de los quistes de mama, que resultaron ser albumina, zn-alfa2-glicoproteina, apolipoproteina d y p-15. Tambien se han clasificado las secreciones mamarias en dos tipos con distintas proteinas. Los polipeptidos caracteristicos de las secreciones tipo i son zn-alfa2-glicoproteina, apolipoproteina d y p-15; mientras que los de las secreciones tipo ii son lactoferrina, lisozima y alfalactalbumina.  ademas, se ha demostrado que la presencia de secreciones tipo ii esta significativamente asociada al cancer de mama.
