Este gen codifica una proteina, denominada exo iii, que se encuentra localizada principalmente asociada a paredes y membranas. La transcripcion del gen exg2 da lugar a un rnam de aproximadamente 1.7 kb cuyo inicio tiene lugar a 32 y 53 nucleotidos antes del atg iniciador. La exo iii presenta una serie de caracteristicas en el extremo carboxilo implicados en la correcta localizacion del polipeptido en la celula ya que la eliminacion de los ultimos 69 aminoacidos conduce a una perdida de su afinidad por la pared celular. La deficiencia en la actividad codificada por el gen exg2 disminuye considerablemente la capacidad de las celulas haploides para llevar a cabo el proceso de conjugacion. Estudios dirigidos al conocimiento de la organizacion estructural de la exo iii, mediante mutagenesis dirigida, han puesto de manifiesto la existencia de un motivo hhhy, conservado en todas las exoglucanasas de levaduras descritas, implicado en su actividad catalitica. Como ultimo paso en la caracterizacion del gen exg2, se determino su posicion en el genoma.
