En la banda b1 las variaciones de la ps o pd preceden a las del irr en un tiempo proximo a 2 s; en la banda b2, presumiblemente debido a la actividad vagal, las variaciones de la ps o pd preceden a las del irr en un tiempo de 317 ms mientras que en la banda b3 ambas fluctuaciones se encuentran en fase. Por otro lado el ritmo ventilatorio esta adelantado respecto a la fluctuacion respiratoria de la psen poco mas de 170 ms.  las tres oscilaciones del irr parecen estar mediadas por la actividad vagal aunque en el origen de la fluctuacion respiratoria ademas parece intervenir la accion mecanica ventilatoria; las oscilaciones respiratorias de la ps y pd son el reflejo de oscilaciones en el volumen sistolico producidas por la actividad mecanica ventilatoria mientras que las oscilaciones mas lentas tanto de la ps como de la pd son el reflejo de la actividad alfa-adrenergica.
