Esta especie esta constituida por diferentes estirpes que se caracterizan por ser de crecimiento rapido (2 a 4 horas de tiempo de generacion) y por nodular y fijar el nitrogeno atmosferico en los nodulos que forman en las raices de la soja (glycine max). En primer lugar se ha estudiado lo que se denomina el rango de hospedador o la especificidad de la nodulacion de la estirpe usda192, encontrando que un aumento de su rango de leguminosas hospedadoras supone una disminucion de su capacidad competitiva. Se ha aislado y secuenciado un gen simbiotico implicado en la especificidad de la nodulacion que no muestra una homolog\u00eda significativa con ningun otro gen secuenciado hasta el momento. Por otro lado se ha desarrollado un programa de mejora genetica para producir estirpes hibridas de r. Fredii que pudieran responder a nuestras necesidades de inoculantes para la soja como alternativa al uso de las estirpes de bradyrhizobium japonicum y de los fertilizantes nitrogenados. Finalmente se ha abordado el estudio de los genes de la nodulacion de la estirpe hh103 de r.
