Luisa <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>El oxido nitroso es el mas popular de los anestesicos inhalatorios, sin embargo, los estudios sobre sus posibles efectos toxicos son escasos. El oxido nitroso puede inhibir la metionina sintasa, un enzima clave en el metabolismo de la metionina, por oxidacion del atomo de cobalto de su coenzima. Se ha estudiado en seres humanos y en ratas de experimentacion el papel de la exposicion del oxido nitroso en el metabolismo de la metionina y otros metabolistos relacionados. Nuestros nuestros estudios han demostrado que la exposicion breve al oxido nitroso en pacientes neoplasicos reduce drasticamente los niveles circulantes de metionina, adiferencia de los que ocurre en pacientes traumatizados o en pacientes neoplasicos anestesiados con propofol. Un efecto similar se observa en la concentracion de metionina hepatica de ratas tratadas con etanol, que disminuye tambien de forma drastica por exposicion al oxido nitroso, al igual que los niveles de glutation. Por lo tanto, nuestros estudios parecen indicar que los pacientes neoplasicos, y probablemente tambien los alcoholicos, constituyen grupos de riesgo en las intervenciones quirurgicas que se realicen bajo anestesia con oxido nitroso.
