En la actualidad, los profesionales sanitarios no han tomado conciencia, en su justa medida, de la trascendencia de dicho estado nutricional. En este trabajo, se demuestra la relacion que existe entre la malnutricion hospitalaria y el aumento de complicaciones y de costes economicos. Se detecta una preValencia de malnutricion al ingreso del 52% de los pacientes y un 72% en el momento del alta hospitalaria, por lo que en el servicio de cirugia general objeto de estudio se genera un 20% de pacientes malnutridos. Tambien se ha determinado que la cantidad de albumina serica junto con el recuento de linfocitos totales al ingreso es un excelente predictor de complicaciones y mas concretamente de la neumonia postoperatoria.
