El objeto del analisis ha sido el papel jugado por el arte visual eclesiastico como sistema comunicativo. La metodolog\u00eda utilizada se ha basado en la historia de las mentalidades, la semiotica de la cultura (juri lotman) y la teoria estetica de la novela de mijail bajtin. La primera parte del trabajo se ha centrado en el estudio de la novela de caballerias como modelo de representacion imaginario de un estamento social. La segunda parte ha estudiado la realidad noruega precristiana en sus aspectos religiosos politicos sociales y esteticos. En esta parte se han analizado tres objetos artisticos: la stavkirke o iglesia romanica de madera de urnes i (s.  xii), las tablas del portal oeste de la stavkirke de hylestad (s. Xiii) y el relicario de la stavkirke de hedal (s. Xiii). La conclusion de la tesis -coincidiendo con la hipotesis esbozada en la introduccion del texto- ha sido que el arte visual en la noruega de los siglos xii y xiii tuvo un papel protagonico en la transformacion del modelo ideologico y de las mentalidades.
