La evolucion de las fases se sigue por difraccion de rayos x. Se controla la granulometria de los productos y se aplican en pastas de porcelana y vidriados, transparente y opaco, determinando los atributos colorimetricos l*a*b*c* y h*. Los productos sinteticos resultan superiores a los naturales (mayor proteccion, mayor densidad y control). Los productos basados en silice son estables en pastas pero no en vidriados.
