La poblacion neuronal presenta incremento en su numero debido a la adicion de interneuronas a circuitos neuronales establecidos en la embriogenesis. En el adulto se identifican tres tipos neuronales que corresponden a celulas en diferentes estados de actividad y desarrollo. La poblacion gltal presenta proliferacion postnatal. En el adulto muestra un mayor grado de especificidad, habiendose identificado cuatro tipos gltales, clasificacion realizada en base al compartimento neuronal que envuelven. Se han identificado franjas tisulares no nerviosas, como el perineurium, que representan barreras a la difusion de nutrientes al tejido nervioso y, ademas, poseen funcion
