Estos fibroblastos presentan proteoglicanos a nivel de matriz extracelular y a nivel de membrana plasmatica. El factor de transformacion beta induce la sintesis de los proteoglicanos de matriz versicano y biglicano, mientras que no afecta a los niveles de decorina secretados. Esta induccion, observable a nivel de proteoglicano entero, fue confirmada tambien a nivel de proteina nucleo y de arn mensajero del proteoglicano. El factor no afecto a los niveles de los proteoglicanos de membrana celular glipicano, fibroglicano y a 125 kda-hspg, pero indujo la elongacion de las cadenas de condroitin sulfato de sindecano y cd44, pero no afecto los niveles de proteina nucleo de este ultimo. Por otro lado, se demostro que biglicano, decorina y fibromodulina se unen especificamente, a traves de sus proteinas nucleo, al tgf-beta. Los tres proteoglicanos mostraron una afinidad similar, de unos 50 nm. Las cadenas de glicosaminoglicanos de biglicano y decorina disminuyeron la afinidad del proteoglicano por el factor. La presencia de los proteoglicanos disminuyo la interaccion del tgf-beta con sus receptores de membrana.
